It started as Sunda Kelapa, a main port for a Hindu Kingdom of Sunda known as Pakuan Pajajaran. In 1527, Fatahillah, a Muslim leader from Demak in Central Java, conquered Sunda Kelapa and renamed it Jayakerta whis means "Great Deed" or "Complete Victory'.<br /><br />On the basis of this victory, modern Jakarta still celebrates its birthday on June 22nd every year, the day Fatahillah gave a town a name of victory over Sundanese Hindus and Portuguese sailors which help them.<br /><br />But that was not the everlasting peace for Jayakarta.
