A Brief History

This city of Jakarta has been developed for more than 500 years. It started as Sunda Kelapa, a main port for a Hindu Kingdom of Sunda known as Pakuan Pajajaran. In 1527, Fatahillah, a Muslim leader from Demak in Central Java, conquered Sunda Kelapa and renamed it Jayakerta whis means "Great Deed" or "Complete Victory'.

On the basis of this victory, modern Jakarta still celebrates its birthday on June 22nd every year, the day Fatahillah gave a town a name of victory over Sundanese Hindus and Portuguese sailors which help them.

But that was not the everlasting peace for Jayakarta. For centuries after this there were so many European powers such as the British, the Dutch and the Portuguese, tried to exert control and influence in the region and especially in archipelago.
